Editing and Deleting Transactions

Made a mistake when recording a trade? This guide explains how to edit or delete transactions and what happens to your portfolio when you do.

Editing a Transaction

  1. Navigate to your portfolio page.
  2. Find the transaction you want to edit. You can access transactions from:
    • The holdings table -- click a holding, then go to the Trades tab
    • The Transactions page in the sidebar (shows all transactions across portfolios)
  3. Click the Edit button (pencil icon) next to the transaction.
  4. Modify the fields you need to change.
  5. Click Save.

What You Can Edit

You can change any field on an existing transaction:

  • Type (BUY, SELL, DIVIDEND)
  • Ticker and exchange
  • Date, quantity, price
  • Fee, currency, exchange rate
  • Notes, broker, franking credits

What Happens When You Edit

When you save an edited transaction, Metrifly automatically recalculates:

  • Holdings -- Share quantities and cost basis are updated
  • Realised gains -- If the transaction is a SELL, gains/losses are recalculated based on the new details
  • Portfolio snapshots -- Historical performance data is regenerated
  • Tax reports -- Capital gains and income reports reflect the changes
note

Changes take effect immediately. There is no "undo" for edits, so double-check your changes before saving. If you make a mistake, you can edit the transaction again.

Deleting a Transaction

  1. Find the transaction you want to delete (from the holdings Trades tab or the Transactions page).
  2. Click the Delete button (trash icon) next to the transaction.
  3. A confirmation dialog appears showing the transaction details.
  4. Click Delete to confirm.

What Happens When You Delete

  • BUY deleted -- The holding's share count and cost basis decrease. If this was the only BUY for a ticker, the holding is removed.
  • SELL deleted -- The holding's share count increases (as if the sale never happened). Realised gains from this sale are removed.
  • DIVIDEND deleted -- The dividend income is removed from reports. The holding's share count is unaffected.
warning

Deleting a transaction cannot be undone. If you are unsure, consider editing the transaction instead of deleting it.

Common Scenarios

Correcting the Wrong Price

  1. Find the transaction.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Update the Price field.
  4. Click Save.

Your cost basis and any related gains/losses will update automatically.

Moving a Transaction to a Different Date

  1. Find the transaction.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Change the Date field.
  4. Click Save.

This may affect:

  • The order of lot allocation for SELL transactions (especially with FIFO)
  • Whether the CGT discount applies (requires holding for >12 months)
  • Which financial year the transaction falls into for tax reports

Changing a Transaction's Ticker

If you entered the wrong ticker:

  1. Delete the incorrect transaction.
  2. Create a new transaction with the correct ticker.
note

Editing the ticker on an existing transaction is possible, but if the original ticker no longer has any transactions, the empty holding will be automatically closed.

Bulk Corrections

If you need to fix many transactions (e.g., wrong exchange, missing fees):

  1. Consider exporting your transactions as CSV from the Transactions page.
  2. Make corrections in a spreadsheet.
  3. Delete the incorrect transactions.
  4. Re-import the corrected data via CSV Import.
